Smart Ass toilet paper is made from 100% recycled Australian paper, meaning no trees are cut down to produce each roll. Instead of using virgin wood pulp like traditional toilet paper, it repurposes existing materials to reduce waste and support a circular production system.

Manufactured locally in Australia, the process reduces transport emissions while supporting local production. Recycled paper also requires significantly less water and energy compared to virgin pulp manufacturing, lowering the overall environmental footprint.

The rolls are made without inks, dyes, or added scents, keeping the product clean and chemical-free while maintaining softness and strength. Each roll is designed to be both sustainable and practical — combining eco-conscious materials with everyday performance.

Developed in collaboration with sustainability advocate Joost Bakker, the product is built around reducing waste, eliminating unnecessary materials, and challenging traditional toilet paper manufacturing methods.

By choosing recycled toilet paper, you're helping divert waste from landfill, reduce demand for deforestation, and support a more sustainable alternative to single-use paper products.

The Smart Ass Story

Smart Ass is a partnership between comedy sketch group Swag On The Beat, sustainability guru Joost Baker, and Australian manufacturer Encore Tissue.

It came about because of a big TP problem.

Australia imports 70,000 tons of toilet paper every year, including our biggest ‘Australian’ recycled brands. That number’s up 30% since 2023. It’s almost 3,000 shipping containers which is a crazy number just for wiping bums.

So the team came together to create the most sustainable brand in Australia: Smart Ass. A locally-owned company which sources 100% of its wastepaper from within Australia, with the most advanced papermill in the country, and a highly sustainable manufacturing process.

It’s the real deal: end-to-end (your end) Australian. You won’t believe recycled toilet paper can be this soft.

And now, Smart Ass is officially stocked in Coles stores nationwide.

Yes – every step of the way. The 100% of the wastepaper source material is from within Australia. The papermill and factory are in Australia. And the owners are Australian too!

Unlike traditional toilet paper made from virgin pulp, Smart Ass is made from 100% recycled Australian paper. Most ‘Australian’ recycled toilet paper is imported from overseas. Whilst some other brands marketed as ‘Made in Australia’ are made using imported wastepaper, with large carbon footprints and unreliable recycled credentials. Smart Ass is different. It’s Australian sourced, produced and owned. End to end, everything happens here. And you won’t believe recycled toilet paper can be this soft.

24 rolls is ideal for smaller households. 48 rolls offers better value and suits larger households or anyone wanting to stock up.
